What is a headshot?

Headshots can take a variety of different forms. The headshots you see above are the Peter Hurley-style headshots, which are close-up headshots taken horizontally rather than in traditional portrait orientation. These headshots are framed from the shoulders up and entail cropping the top of the head in order to fill the frame with your face. This style can be used for a variety of purposes including corporate headshots, LinkedIn or other social media, personal branding, acting, and many more.

The Session

My headshot sessions are designed to be fun and easy. Prior to scheduling a session, we will have an initial consultation to ensure that your expectations are clear and understood. We’ll brainstorm together to create a vision in line with your personal and professional needs. This should take about fifteen minutes.

We'll take plenty of shots during the session so that we end up with the appropriate number of deliverable shots for your session type. Within 24 hours of your session, you’ll be granted access to an online proofing gallery that you’ll use to choose your favorite shots for retouching. You will be able to share your proofing gallery with family, friends, and anyone else who might help you select your favorite shots.

** Full payment is required in order to schedule a session. **

What to Bring and How to Prepare

Hair and Makeup

Please arrive ready to shoot.

It's a good idea to stick to what you know works. Experimenting with a new barber / hair stylist or new skin care products in the days leading up to the session has resulted in instances of people having to cancel their session because something went wrong. If you want to try something new for your headshot session, go for it, just give yourself some time to make sure it works for you prior to scheduling the session. The most important elements necessary to create great images are comfort and confidence. You have to be comfortable with your appearance in order for your face to convey confidence. There's nowhere to hide in a headshot, so don't put yourself in a position where you'd want to.

Clothing

For Standard and Deluxe sessions, bring your favorite items—clean and wrinkle-free. Choose items that make you feel confident, but that are also comfortable. It’s important for you to feel comfortable in clothes you love to wear because that comfort always comes through in pictures. Keep in mind that your outfit will only be visible from the shoulders up. If you wore a shirt with a collar, for example, everything below the collar points would be out of the frame. Ladies, if you wear a strapless shirt, only your bare shoulders will be visible in the frame and not the shirt.

Recommendations

  • Solid colors are best. Avoid busy patterns, stripes, and prints and extremely bright colors.

  • Choose colors that accentuate your skin tone and eye color

  • Think of layering your clothing with jackets, vests, scarves, etc. to add interest and texture. Bring a few options and don't limit yourself to seasonal clothes.

  • Bring multiple colors and cuts

  • Bring tops with varying necklines to add variety to your looks

  • Make sure your clothes fit and are wrinkle-free

  • When wearing a necktie, shirts without buttons on the collar points work better than shirts with them. The collars with buttons tend to bunch up.

  • Make sure you love them! The most important thing is to be comfortable because when you feel good, you look good!

Jewelry

None is best. Otherwise, be conservative. The star of the show here is you! In a tight headshot, earrings, necklaces, chains, etc. can dominate the image and take away from the main subject, which is you.

Retouching

Here is a list of what retouching includes:

  • Blemish removal

  • Line and wrinkle reduction (not elimination)

  • Eye whitening and brightening

  • Teeth whitening (but not “paper white” whitening)

  • Color correction

  • Under eye treatment

  • Lighting enhancements

  • Minor stray hairs

  • Background clean-up

After selecting your favorite shots from your proofing gallery, those images will be retouched and then delivered to you electronically. The retouching process normally takes three to four business days.

I do all my own retouching, which I approach with a minimalist philosophy. My approach is to make the necessary adjustments to make you look your best while maintaining the integrity of your appearance. The final image will look like you...not an idealistic version of you, or you from ten years ago. The final image will be an honest, flattering image of you as you appeared when you stood in front of my camera. I refer you to the images I have on display. If you like my work, and you can see yourself in it, then the chances are very good that you'll like what I do for you.

If you grew a pimple last night or had some other kind of skin outbreak, don't worry, I'll take care of it. That stuff is quite common and those temporary blemishes are not representative of who you are, so I get rid of those with no problem. But if your skin is just fine and you want it to look like porcelain, that's not the kind of retouching I do. The faces on the magazine covers do not exist in real life and I do not endeavor to create such images. Again, if you like what you see on my website, you'll probably like what I can do for you. Nobody on my website is a professional model with perfect skin, but they all look great.

Choose Your Photographer Carefully

Remember, your goal is to produce the most amazing images of you possible, so definitely shop around to find the photographer you feel confident and excited about working with to produce those images. It's important that you speak to any photographer you're considering before scheduling a session. Text messages or email will not give you any real indication of whether or not you'll be able to successfully collaborate with the photographer to produce the kind of images you have in mind. If it doesn't sound like you're going to have fun AND get the kind of images that YOU want, then keep looking until you can find someone who gets you excited about working together. You're going to a photo shoot, not the principal's office!

Headshot Modeling Tips

Here are links to a few videos to help you prepare for your headshot session. The first three are from the master himself, Mr. Peter Hurley. These are great techniques to apply any time you're having your picture taken.

The short version

  • Bring clothes that you love, are comfortable in, and make you feel great!...but leave your flashy jewelry, plaid, paisley, and Hawaiian prints at home.

  • Love yourself. If you don't love the person you see in the mirror, the camera will see that. Just love who you are and embrace all the little features that make you uniquely beautiful and the camera will see that love and that beauty and capture them forever.
